More Letters of Violation of Mohawk Law issued to persons residing illegally in Kahnawake - special Community Meeting planned

09/07/2016

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) would like to advise Kahnawakehr:non that letters of Violation of Mohawk Law Non-Entitlement to Reside in the Mohawk Territory of Kahnaw:ke have been delivered to 24 persons who are presumed to be residing illegally in the Territory.

The 24 letters, delivered by bailiff, are in addition to twenty (20) similar letters delivered on or about 20, Ohiar:ha/June 2016.

The community has not changed its position on the Kahnaw:ke Membership Law, said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. These new letters have been issued as a result of complaints from community members like the ones in June. Recipients are being asked to respect our laws and the will of the people by either vacating the Territory or providing proof of residency elsewhere.

A special Community Meeting to deal with Membership and Residency issues is in the planning stages and will be announced shortly.

The Special Meeting will be completely separate from the amendment process currently underway using the Community Decision Making Process, Ietsnhaienhs Sky-Deer continued. It will also be separate from the upcoming fall Community Meeting. There is much to discuss, and wed like to ensure that the MCK reflects the will of the community, especially since this topic is one of our political priorities.

As always, the MCK reminds the community to remain respectful, peaceful and patient on this issue.
