Kahnawake sends assistance in search for missing Cree hunters

11/02/2017

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that the Waskaganish Nation Band has requested further assistance from members of the Kahnaw:ke Search & Rescue team to assist in the continuing search for a pair of Cree men who went missing when their boat apparently capsized while on a hunting trip.

MCK Emergency Preparedness & Planning General Manager KellyAnn Meloche, along with Mike Williams, Parker Jacobs, Quinn Stacey, Frank Fafa McComber and Lance Goodleaf, are expected to arrive in Waskaganish later today.

According to Ratsnhaienhs Bobby Patton, the request was made by Grand Chief Darlene Cheechoo. He also stated that the Crees appreciate the leadership abilities that the Kahnaw:ke team has displayed in the field.

The Waskaganish Nation Band is paying all expenses.

The hunters left for their trip on October 17th and had not been heard from since. The body of Matthew Diamond was recovered this past weekend, while a funeral was held on Monday for Patrick Salt, who had been found earlier. The search continues for their two companions.
