ISC Kahnawake Office Closed Temporarily over Safety Concerns

Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) has been informed by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) that a temporary closure of its Kahnawà:ke office has been issued due to safety concerns regarding the building′s structural integrity.

“We received a report that the upstairs floor is abnormally soft in some places, the ceiling beams are warped, and, above all, cracks have appeared in some places,” said a contact from ISC. “Until we can ensure that the building is safe for employees and members coming in, we are closing as a precautionary measure.”

The MCK is responding proactively to this situation. The MCK’s Asset Management Unit is on-site today to conduct a thorough assessment of the building′s structure.

“We are committed to supporting the community during this time,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. “We have offered a temporary space for the ISC office to ensure they can continue providing essential services to Kahnawa’kehró:non for as long as possible. Our priority is to make certain that community members have uninterrupted access to the services they need.”

In the interim, community members can access ISC services by phone, by calling 1-800-263-5592 and choosing option 1. You can also access online services at www.canada.ca/Indian-status-card.

As previously announced, the ISC Kahnawà:ke office is scheduled to relocate to Complex Guy Favreau in Montreal, in early 2025.

Updates on this situation will be announced as they occur.
