Six-Plex housing project announced

The Social Development Unit (SDU) Housing Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke is pleased to announce that Chief & Council have given formal approval today for a new Multi-Unit Housing project that will address the housing needs for at least six Kahnawa�kehr�:non who are either elderly and/or disabled.

The construction of a �Six-Plex� Housing unit was approved under the Indian and Northern Affairs Canada / Canada�s Economic Action Plan for 2010-2011 fund, aimed at stimulating the economy while addressing housing needs within the community.

The unit will be constructed behind the Kahnawake Learning Center, a location that is convenient to both the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center and the Elders Lodge.

�We�re pleased to see this project come through for our elderly and disabled,� said Portfolio Chief Martin Leborgne. �It�s difficult to find housing in our community, let alone housing that is equipped for the disabled and elderly.�

A great deal of pre-planning has already gone into the proposal and Chief Leborgne has made public reference to the proposal in several instances recently. In the upcoming weeks, the SDU will be working on occupancy criteria for potential tenants who would qualify as being either disabled or elderly.

Construction of the �Six-Plex� is targeted to begin before winter, with a call for tenders to be announced shortly.
