Reminder: First Hearing for Election Law Tuesday evening

The Kahnawà:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to remind community members that proposed changes to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law will be brought forward using the Community Decision Making Process at the first Community Hearing on this issue on Tuesday, 28 Enníska/ February.

It is intended that Kahnawa’kehró:non will come to an agreement on the scope, purpose and intent of proposed amendments, with the ultimate intention of giving a mandate to a working group to create amendments that meets its needs.

The questions that will be put forth for the community’s consideration are as follows:

1.    “Should the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law be amended?”
2.    “If yes, which proposed recommendations should be given priority?”

Among the list of possible amendments for consideration are criteria for candidates; term limits; the number of Council Chiefs; and the creation of consistency between the Election Law and the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law.

The Hearing will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 6 to 8pm. Please note that the organizers will be maintaining a strict schedule of two hour meetings in order to respect the schedules of as many people as possible. Participants are being asked to arrive by approximately 5:45pm in order for seating arrangements to be explained.
