MCK to present Kahnaw�ke position at two Standing Committee hearings in Ottawa

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to inform the community that Chief Lloyd Phillips will be in Ottawa today to present Kahnaw�:ke�s position at two separate Parliamentary Standing Committees.

The first, to the Standing Committee on the Status of Women, is scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30pm. Chief Phillips will present Kahnaw�:ke�s position on S-2, Canada�s legislation on the division of matrimonial properties on reserves, which is in its final stages before it is expected to be passed into law.

The second, to the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, will be to address Canada�s S-16 �Tackling Contraband Tobacco� legislation, which is in its Second Reading in the Senate. Chief Phillips is scheduled to appear from 6:15pm to 7pm.

�The Conservative Government has made it clear that they have no intention of working with First Nations on these or any laws that affect our people,� said Chief Phillips. �Despite their ignorance, we still must make sure our views are heard. We want to make it very clear that the situation is unacceptable and will only succeed in driving a bigger wedge between us.�
