Chiefs attending conference on Canada S-2 Matrimonial Real Interests law

06/17/2014

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that Chiefs Lloyd Phillips and Clinton Phillips will be attending a three-day conference on Canadas S-2 Matrimonial Real Interests legislation. The conference takes place from today (Tuesday) through Thursday, 17-19 Ohiar:ha/June in Toronto.

The two chiefs are the leading the S-2 file on behalf of the MCK.

S-2, which was passed in Canadas Parliament in 2013, will come into effect this December. The law stipulates that First Nations who pass their own legislation beforehand will be exempted. Kahnaw:ke is in the midst of creating the Kahnaw:ke Family Homes Law to counter S-2. The first draft of the Kahnaw:ke law was approved at the 27, Onerahtohk:wa/May hearing using the Community Decision Making Process.

Were pleased with the progress were making on this complicated file, said Chief Clinton Phillips. The community has been very supportive of the work done so far, and were hoping that this conference will help us to ensure that were covering every base necessary for our law to be most effective in protecting Kahnaw:kes interests.
