Election Law survey results in; date set for next CDMP hearing

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that results have been tabulated for an informal poll conducted in August to gauge community opinion on one of the proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke Election Law. The results have been submitted to the Kahnaw�:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission and will be made available shortly on their website at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.

Discussions on proposed changes to the number of Council Chiefs have not resulted in consensus. The topic will be revisited at the next hearing, using the Community Decision Making Process, on Tuesday, Seskehk�:wa/September 23. The hearing is scheduled for 6pm to 8:30pm at the Karonhian�nhnha School gymnasium.

Results of the informal poll, conducted over two days at the Services Complex with 169 community members participating, are as follows:
�    88 community members supported a reduction to 9 Chiefs
�    50 supported maintaining Council composition at 12 Chiefs
�    28 supported a reduction to 10 Chiefs
�    3 offered no preference but did provide comments

�There are obviously many varying opinions on this, which reflects the outcome of the hearings,� said MCK Technician Trina C. Diabo, who has been working on the amendment process since its inception. �Once we determine the outcome of this question, we�ll be very close to concluding this portion of the CDMP.�
