Chiefs Gina Deer and Bobby Patton to attend Iroquois Caucus tobacco meeting in Ottawa

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa�kehr�:non that Chiefs Gina Deer and Bobby Patton will be attending a meeting in Ottawa being organized by the Iroquois Caucus on Friday as part of the ongoing actions to combat Canada�s C-10 �Anti-Contraband Tobacco� legislation.

Chief Deer is the Portfolio Chief on the tobacco file, while Chief Patton is one of the organizers on behalf of the Iroquois Caucus.

�We will continue to do everything in our power to fight Canada�s criminalization of our participation in an industry that our people have every right to be part of,� said Chief Deer. �As part of our strategy we are going to speak to a major law firm to discuss some of the options that are available to us.�

�No firm has been engaged to defend our interests at this time,� Chief Deer added. �But it�s obvious to everyone that we cannot sit still and wait for things to happen. There�s too much at stake.�
