Park equipment undergoing repair and removal

09/15/2015

The Public Safety Unit (formerly Community Protection) is informing the community that a community wide safety audit has taken place to ensure compliance with safety standards for childrens playgrounds.

Currently, there are 13 areas throughout the community which have public play structures (not including schools). Several community playgrounds fail to meet safety standards, resulting in the immediate removal of any elements which cannot safely be brought up to code.

Alwyns Park and Sesame Street Park will see removal of all elements except the swings.  All playground elements in the Catholic Cemetery Park will be removed.  There will be minor maintenance in the other parks to ensure they remain operational.

The safety inspections were the result of advocacy on behalf of the Kahnawake Child Safety Network and concerns from community members looking to prevent injuries.

All parents are reminded to remain vigilant when their children are using the playgrounds and report any damage or areas of concern to MacKenzie Whyte at the Sports and Recreation Unit at (450) 638-3311.

A video segment specifically on this subject is available for viewing on www.KahnawakeTV.com and Pauls Cable channel 35 and 300.
