Membership Law Hearing continues next Tuesday at Golden Age Club

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise Kahnawa’kehró:non that the First Hearing continues next Tuesday evening (February 9th) for proposed amendments to the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law.

There are three sections on the agenda. These include:

•    Section 12: Application Process/Recognition. The meeting will resume at Section 12.4, as consensus was reached on the first three clauses in Section 12 at the January 26th meeting
•    Section 13: Instatement and Reinstatement (former Section 10.3 moves to this section)
•    Section 14: Adopted Children. Major redraft of this section, with adopted children being treated in a similar manner to other First Nations/
Onkwehonwe children
•    Additionally, any relevant/related Definitions (Section 4) from this meeting will be addressed as they arise.

“Although we are dealing with sensitive matters, I am hopeful that we’ll have as much thought-provoking discussion as we did at the last meeting,” said Membership Portfolio Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “Our goal is to make amendments that will keep this law functional for years to come.”

The meeting, which is the sixth in the First Hearing phase of the Community Decision Making Process, will take place at the Golden Age Club from 6pm to 8:30pm, unless consensus is reached beforehand.
