Chateauguay, Laprairie Members of Parliament to meet with Grand Chief today

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that two Liberal Members of Parliament  will be in Kahnawà:ke this afternoon to meet with Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton and Chief Political Advisor Winona Polson-Lahache.

Brenda Shanahan, the MP for Chateauguay-Lacolle and Jean-Claude Poissant, representing the Laprairie riding, requested to meet with Grand Chief Norton. No formal agenda has been set but, rather, the meeting will be an opportunity for the three to get acquainted.

“We’re pleased to have been approached by the two Members of Parliament who represent our closest neighbors,” said Grand Chief Norton. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to discuss our ideas and to gain a better understanding of our shared concerns.”

“Both Ms. Shanahan and Mr. Poissant were present when we met with Minister of Indigenous Affairs Carolyn Bennett a few weeks ago, but they were there mostly as observers,” he continued. “We’ll use this opportunity to work towards building relationships that, for all intents and purposes, have not existed for many years.”
