Canadian Pacific Railway Vegetation Management Program

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the Community that Kahnaw�:ke will once again participate in the Vegetation Management Program at the request of Canadian Pacific. The program is required to ensure the safe operations of passenger and freight trains and to maintain the structural integrity of the railway lines.

Only approved herbicides are used and the minimum effective amount will be sprayed.

Spraying will take place on the ballast section (between the rails) of the tracks on Wednesday, May 31st, weather permitting, using specialized equipment that includes shrouds that prevent spray drift. No spraying will take place outside of the ballast section and all safety precautions will be taken, as is normal during these procedures.

The application will happen only once this season and should take approximately one hour to complete. Weather conditions are strictly monitored and no spraying is done if wind conditions are greater than eight (8) KPH to prevent any off-target herbicide application.

The MCK wishes to advise Kahnawa�kehr�:non that railway tracks are inherently dangerous and the main goal for allowing spraying is to prevent derailments. Community safety is the top priority.
