Kahnawake Family Homes Law repealed, re-enters CDMP

01/24/2018

The Kahnaw:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to advise the community that the Kahnaw:ke Family Homes and Matrimonial Interests Law, which had been enacted by Chief & Council on 27, Kentnha/October 2014 and put into force on 8, Tsothhrha/December 2014, was repealed at the duly-convened Council Meeting held on Monday, 22, Tsothohrhk:wa/January 2018.

The request was made to have the Law repealed because no substantive activity took place to move it forward once the Law re-entered the regular Community Decision Making Process (CDMP), as per KLCC requirement. The Law had been passed using the CDMPs Urgent Process provision.

The Mohawk Council Resolution was passed by ten (10) Council Chiefs, with Ratsnhaienhs Clinton Phillips abstaining. Ratsnhaienhs Bobby Patton was on Bereavement Leave and not present for the meeting.

As part of the Resolution, the Law was immediately resubmitted to the KLCC in order to be prioritized and set on the 2015-2018 Legislative Agenda/Calendar using the regular CDMP.
