Elements of Federal Cannabis Act Illegal in Kahnawake

10/13/2018

The Kahnawake Peacekeepers announced yesterday that they arrested two persons in relation to a raid at a local business on Highway 132. A local 53-year-old male and a non-local 62-year-old female were arrested and released. Cannabidiol products were seized at the Joint, including edibles and liquids as well as seeds.

The Peacekeepers wish to remind community members that, at this time, cannabis is still a controlled substance, and the sale of cannabis products in Kahnaw:ke is illegal. Moreover, despite the upcoming coming into force Canadas Cannabis Act, a moratorium will remain in place within the Territory on any sales of cannabis or cannabis products until such time as a Kahnaw:ke law specific to cannabis comes into force and allows for sale within the Territory.

According to the Cannabis Act, as of October 17th, 2018 adults who are 18-years-of-age or older would be legally able to:

  • Possess up to 30 grams of legal cannabis, dried or equivalent in non-dried form in public
  • Share up to 30 grams of legal cannabis with other adults
  • Purchase dried or fresh cannabis and cannabis oil from a provincially-licensed retailer
  • *Grow, from licensed seed or seedlings, up to four cannabis plants per residence for personal use
  • Make cannabis products, such as food and drinks, at home as long as organic solvents are not used to create concentrated products
Cannabis edible products and concentrates will be legal for sale approximately one year after the Cannabis Act has come into force on October 17, 2018.

*This section of the Federal Cannabis Act is illegal in the jurisdiction of Kahnawake.
