Webpage launched to inform community on detrimental S3 legislation

11/26/2018

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to inform all Kahnawakehr:non that a webpage has been launched to provide information on Canadas S-3 legislation amendments to the Indian Act, which can pose a new assimilation threat for Kahnaw:ke.

As stated in a press release sent on Friday, November 23rd, According to Canadas own estimates, over a million new Status Indians will be created based on new and open eligibility criteria in the Indian Act as a result of the S3 amendments. Of this, between 35,000 to 65,000 could be added to the Mohawks of Kahnaw:ke Federal list, which is controlled by Canada and not to be confused with our internal Kahnaw:ke Kanienkeh:ka Registry. Many of these persons would likely have a very distant connection to our community by either ancestry or family ties and, in the near future, they will significantly outnumber the Kanienkeh:ka of Kahnaw:ke who grew up and reside in the Territory.

Kiosks to provide further information are also being held at the Kahnaw:ke Services Complex on Tuesday, December 4th from 9am - 12 noon and Tuesday, December 11th from 9am - 4pm, to further explain the urgency of the situation.

Sessions at the Community Organizations, as well as focus groups and other special meetings, will be scheduled shortly for anyone who wants a detailed presentation and the ability to ask questions.
