Special Community Meeting set for S-3 Indian Act amendments

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to inform the community that a Special Community Meeting on the issue of Canada�s S-3 amendments to the Indian Act and its anticipated impacts on First Nations across the country.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 Tsoth�hrha/December at the Community Room located at the Peacekeepers station. It is scheduled from 7pm to 8:30pm.

�While we have been informing Kahnawa�kehr�:non about the huge problems S-3 will no doubt cause for us, many people are saying they are unaware of the situation,� Iets�nhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer stated. �Our job will be to ensure as many people as possible will become knowledgeable about this piece of legislation that Canada is burdening us with. And we need to give our people opportunities to ask questions and make suggestions to make sure we take the right path to address this assimilation threat.�

Additionally, Public Information Kiosks will be held at the Services Complex on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, December 4th from 9am to 12 noon
  • Tuesday, December 11th from 9am to 4pm
Finally, information on S-3 can be accessed at www.kahnawake.com/S3.

According to Canada�s own estimates, over a million new Status �Indians� will be created based on the new criteria set out in the S-3 amendments. Of this, between 35,000 to 65,000 could be added to the Mohawks of Kahnaw�:ke federal list.
