Federal Minister of Justice meets with Council of Chiefs

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Federal Minister of Justice, the Honorable David Lametti, met with the Council of Chiefs this afternoon in Kahnaw�:ke.

Topics discussed included:

  • Online Gaming
  • Kahnaw�:ke�s Justice Act
The meeting between the Council of Chiefs and the Minister of Justice is the first occasion in which the MCK has been able to formally engage in discussions on the issue of online gaming with the federal government.

Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton stated, �the meeting was an opportunity for us to educate Canada on the significant progress we have made in online gaming, and to seek out arrangements that facilitate their respect of Kahnaw�:ke�s jurisdiction and authority in such activities.�

�We also had the opportunity to have similar discussions on Kahnaw�:ke�s assertion and implementation of the Kahnaw�:ke Justice Act,� he added.  �The hope is this meeting will be the starting point to laying the foundation for the future of both our jurisdiction and economic growth.�
