Nitsnhaienhs Perron and Montour visit New Credit Mississaugas to discuss Consultation

09/18/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Nitsnhaienhs Tonya Perron, Ross Montour and members of the MCKs Consultation Committee are visiting the Mississaugas of the New Credit to meet with their Consultation Unit.

The MCKs Consultation Committee is part of the Indigenous Rights & Research Portfolio and is principally involved in matters related to the duty to consult by governments and project proponents.

Over the past year the demands on our portfolio team to engage in consultation activities has grown to the point where it has become increasingly clear that we need to commit to the development of a unit devoted to defending our Indigenous and treaty rights in consultation activities, said Ratsnhaienhs Ross Montour. This unit would be committed to building our capacity to conduct the kind of research we require to advance in this work. This includes research aimed at firmly establishing the integrity of our territorial and aboriginal title assertions.

The Mississaugas of the New Credit have gone far in the development of such a unit, Ratsnhaienhs Montour continued. It is our goal to learn what they have done in this field and, more important, how we can learn from their experience.

The meetings will take place today and tomorrow. Chief Political Advisor Winona Polson-Lahache, Francis Walsh of MCK Legal Services and technician Brittany Diabo are also participating in the meetings.
