Blue-Collar Park in the works for the MCK

12/11/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that plans are in the works for a Blue-Collar Park to be located in the Clay Mountains area adjacent to the St. Lawrence Seaway, pending community engagement on the issue.

The new facility will house the MCKs Public Works (Maintenance, Roads, Heavy Equipment, Waste Management, etc.) and Capital Units and will also include the School Bus depot. Currently, most of these facilities are located in a residential area at the town garage, with the resultant excess noise and traffic. Additionally, the existing garage yard is insufficient for current community needs, with no room for needed expansion.

The move will result in increased safety for pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

The MCK is embarking on a campaign to ensure that the community understands the rationale for this project, and address questions that may arise, said Ratsnhaienhs Lindsay LeBorgne, who holds the Infrastructure, Transport & Operations portfolio for the MCK. Community engagement will take place in January.

The area being considered for the Blue-Collar Park would see the removal of thousands of tons of stone and clay deposited from the building of the Seaway. It has been designated as commercial lands for many years, but Tewatohnhisaktha has indicated there are no plans to use it for that purpose.
