MCK advisory on train whistles, addresses complaints

03/11/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to remind community members that train whistles are a safety requirement for railroads. Unless formal arrangements are made with communities/cities/municipalities, train crews MUST engage their whistles when approaching a level crossing.

Additionally, the train crews must engage the whistles when a dangerous situation presents itself, such as persons or vehicles on the tracks.

However, the MCK has received numerous complaints from community members who say some train crews may be utilizing their whistles in an unreasonable manner.

Please be assured that the MCK is addressing this matter with Canadian Pacific, said Ratsnhaienhs Lindsay LeBorgne, the Lead on the Infrastructure, Transport & Operations portfolio. If it is determined that some crews are indeed using their whistles in an overenthusiastic manner, CP is quite willing to take corrective actions. We will also continue to have dialogue with CP regarding other issues or suggestions that may arise.

Those who have complaints regarding train whistles being engaged in an unreasonable manner should contact Ratsnhaienhs LeBorgne at 450-632-7500 or lindsay.leborgne@mck.ca. Please state clearly the exact time and date and, if possible, the direction the train was traveling.
