Kahnawake Residency Law one step closer to implementation with passage of Regulations

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to announce that seven (7) regulations for the Kahnaw�:ke Residency Law were passed by consensus via Mohawk Council Executive Directive at the duly-convened Council meeting held on Wednesday, July 8th.
The passage of the regulations are an important step in the implementation of the Kahnaw�:ke Residency Law. They are as follows:
- Custom Code Calculation for Kahnaw�:ke Lineage
- Community Review Board
- Applications for Permission to Reside
- Complaints
- Language & Culture Testing
- Oath of Respect
- Confidentiality
�The passage of the regulations is the next step in moving forward with implementation of the Kahnaw�:ke Residency Law,� said Iets�nhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, the lead on the Heritage portfolio. �We wish to remind the community to be prepared for ongoing information sessions on the Law as we move towards full implementation in the coming months.�
The Kahnaw�:ke Residency Law was enacted on June 17, 2019 after entering the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP) via the Urgent Process in 2017. Because it was passed using the urgent process, the Law will be brought back to the regular CDMP in the coming months. (Please note that, as the Law reenters the CDMP, the Law will not be on hold � it is already enacted and in effect.)
