Recreation Bay area still off limits Seaway area cleared

08/14/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) is informing the community to continue avoiding use of the Recreation Bay area until further notice.

Earlier this week, the accidental shut down of the lift station resulted in an emergency bypass of sewage into the water at Recreation Bay for approximately two hours. Environmental Health Services (EHS) is conducting water sampling of the area, which currently indicate that there are still levels of coliform bacteria.

Until further notice, community members are asked not to use the water for recreational purposes, including swimming at the Tekakwitha Island bridge.

EHS will continue sampling the water until the levels are considered safe in Recreation Bay.

The seaway portion where discharge was re-routed has been cleared for recreational use for water vessels. Please note that the Seaway has always been a swimming-prohibited zone due to the danger of boats and ships.

If you have any questions or for more information please call the MCK at (450) 632-7500 or EHS at (450) 635-9945.
