MCK becomes strategic partner to Hydro-Qu�bec on energy transmission initiative to supply power to New York City

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (�MCK�) is pleased to announce that it has reached a Memorandum of Understanding (�MOU�) with Hydro-Qu�bec to partner on theHertel-New York Interconnection Project to transmit green renewable energy to New York City in the event that Hydro-Qu�bec wins the energy supply contract. This is a historic achievement for both Kahnaw�:ke and Hydro-Qu�bec: the first shared ownership agreement for an export transmission line.

The MCK will become joint owners of a 400-kV underground transmission line that will run from the Hertel substation in La Prairie to the US border � where it will connect with the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a line which will be built between the Canadian border and Astoria, Queens, New York.

Per the MOU, the MCK will support the construction of the line and the project and will benefit from the revenues over a 40-year term. Please note that a number of issues remain to be negotiated and discussed before the parties sign definitive agreements if Hydro-Qu�bec wins the bid.

As the line will be constructed on Seigneury of Sault St. Louis lands, it was important for the MCK to forge a strategic partnership with Hydro-Qu�bec. As the Hertel Line will be carrying a renewable source of energy which will help decarbonize New York City � a city which Mohawk iron workers helped build � this project meets MCK�s objectives of investing in environmentally sustainable projects.

This is a major accomplishment for Kahnaw�:ke and a great step forward for Hydro-Qu�bec in its relationship with the community, which exemplifies what it means to be a good corporate citizen. This project demonstrates that collaborating with an Indigenous community can prove to be mutually beneficial for industry and Indigenous communities alike. With the impact of COVID-19 on community funds, this project will help stabilize the community balance sheet and will help Kahnaw�:ke become increasingly self-sufficient, which is a key to self-reliance.

Le Conseil Mohawk de Kahnaw�:ke (�CMK") est heureux d′annoncer qu′il a conclu un Protocole d′entente (�PE�) avec Hydro-Qu�bec pour s′associer dans le cadre du projet d′interconnexion Hertel-New York visant � transmettre de l′�nergie renouvelable � la ville de New York dans l′�ventualit� o� Hydro-Qu�bec remporterait le contrat d′approvisionnement en �nergie. Il s′agit d′une r�alisation historique pour Kahnaw�:ke et Hydro-Qu�bec : c′est le premier partenariat visant une ligne de transport d�di�e � l�exportation.

Le CMK deviendra copropri�taire d′une ligne de transport d�electricit� souterraine de 400 kV � partir du poste situ� Hertel � La Prairie jusqu′� la fronti�re am�ricaine � o� il se connectera avec la ligne Champlain Hudson Power Express qui, elle, sera construite entre la fronti�re canado-am�ricaine et Astoria, Queens, New York.

Selon le PE, le CMK soutiendra la construction de la ligne et le projet et b�n�ficiera des revenus provenant du projet sur une dur�e de 40 ans. Veuillez noter qu′un certain nombre de questions restent � n�gocier et � discuter avant que les parties ne signent des accords d�finitifs si Hydro-Qu�bec remporte le contrat d′approvisionnement.

Consid�rant que la ligne sera construite dans la Seigneurie de Sault-Saint-Louis et sur les terres des Mohawks, il �tait important pour le CMK de former un partenariat strat�gique avec Hydro-Qu�bec. Comme la ligne Hertel transportera une source d′�nergie renouvelable qui aidera � d�carboner la Ville de New York � une ville, d�ailleurs, que les ferronniers Mohawks ont aid� � b�tir � ce projet r�pond aux objectifs du CMK d′investir dans des projets durables sur le plan environnemental.

Il s′agit d′un accomplissement majeur pour Kahnaw�:ke et d′un grand pas en avant pour Hydro-Qu�bec dans sa relation avec la communaut�, qui illustre ce que signifie �tre un bon citoyen corporatif. Ce projet d�montre que la collaboration avec une communaut� autochtone peut s′av�rer mutuellement b�n�fique pour des corporations et les communaut�s autochtones. Avec l′impact de la COVID-19 sur les fonds communautaires, ce projet contribuera � stabiliser le bilan financier de la communaut� et aidera Kahnaw�:ke � devenir de plus en plus autosuffisante.
