Justice Commission: Preliminary Numbers Encouraging

02/23/2009

The Kahnaw:ke Justice Commission has compiled data from surveys compiled at the recent public information sessions and would like to inform the community of some preliminary information.

Of the 56 surveys completed by community members, 55 supported a Kahnaw:ke justice system, which amounts to 98%.

As well, a clear majority supported the idea that the Justice Commission creates a draft document as a starting point.

While these results are encouraging, we must remind ourselves and the community that we are still in the preliminary phase, said Justice Coordinator Ron Skye. We are not yet at the point where we will ask for a community mandate to move forward to create a law. Obviously, we have to engage more Kahnawakehr:non and get a lot more input.

Skye says that the Commission is embarking on a more aggressive approach, in which community members, families and organizations will be contacted directly and invited to attend information sessions.

Of course, we will be very happy to accommodate requests for meetings, he continued. The more people that participate, the more accurate the process will be. And that would be a better indicator of the communitys true wishes on this matter.
