05/07/2009

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke has learned that the new Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Secure Certificates of Indian Status will be accepted by the United States Department of Homeland Security as identification when crossing the border, by land, into the United States.

As well, the deadline of 1, Ohiar:ha/June to use the new Secure Certificate for border crossing into the United States has been delayed. No new date has been announced.

An official news release is forthcoming early next week from INAC but the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke has received confirmation of this information.

We are informing the community on this immediately, said Grand Chief Michael Ahrhrhon Delisle, Jr. This is a very positive development. Kahnawakehr:non can rest assured that we will continue to remain vigilant in order to protect our rights in this matter.
