The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s Office of the Council of Chiefs (OCC) wishes to inform the community that it has welcomed two students conducting a placement through the University of Victoria’s Indigenous Governance Program. Students Nelly Marcoux and Jessica Tessier are participating in a Community Governance Project as part of their Masters of Arts studies and will be working in the OCC for a period of 3-4 months on governance-related files.

“It’s very exciting to have these students on board,” said Winona Polson-Lahache, OCC Project Leader. “They have stringently studied Indigenous governance in an academic program with a renowned reputation and, in the future, will likely take on significant roles in related areas of work.”

“We expect that not only will the students benefit from their exposure to a learning environment, but that we (OCC) will also benefit from the contributions they will make in areas that need extra assistance,” added OCC Chief of Staff Mike O’Brien.

Professor Gerald Taiaiake Alfred, a key faculty member of the University of Victoria Indigenous Governance Program, has been instrumental in setting up the Community Governance project.
