The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to inform the community that the “Make Kahnawà:ke Stop Day” safety campaign held today was a success.
The Kahnawake Peacekeepers handed out between 30-35 tickets to drivers who either didn’t stop or failed to make a complete stop during the two-hour campaign held between 10am and 12 noon at various stop signs throughout Kahnawà:ke. Numerous community members participated in the event, which was the brainchild of Timmy Norton.
Mr. Norton took the initiative because of concerns about the high number of vehicles making ‘rolling stops’ at school crossings. He raised the topic at this month’s Spring Community Meeting and received unanimous support by the MCK, with several Chiefs actively participating.
“The fact that so many tickets were handed out despite the advance publicity of this campaign shows that there is still much work to be done,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. “Chief & Council would like to commend Timmy for taking the initiative. It shows that individual people can make a positive difference.”
