The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that endurance solo river swimmer David Merpaw will pass through Kahnawà:ke as he swims the St Lawrence River to raise awareness on protection of the river and its sensitive ecosystems.

Mr. Merpaw brings attention to environmental work being carried out by the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences, who researches biodiverse freshwater ecosystems within the St. Lawrence and around the world.

"I think it’s great what David is doing to help protect the environment and species-at-risk," said Chief Billy Diabo. "To swim all alone is a big task in itself, we wish him the best."

Mr. Merpaw is swimming from Kingston, Ontario to Montreal and will visit Kahnawà:ke today before beginning his swim to the port of Montreal tomorrow. The Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers will provide an escort alongside Mr. Merpaw while he swims through the Territory.
