Economic Relief Measures Fund

April 1, 2020

In response to the COVID-19 emergency measures within the community, the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) has approved a $9 million Economic Relief Measures (ERM) Fund.

Kahnawà:ke Economic Relief Measures Fund

The purpose of the Fund is to support workers and businesses who are most vulnerable to the economic interruption occurring as a result of the COVID-19 related emergency measures in the community. More specifically:

If you are recently unemployed as a result of COVID-19, immediately contact MCK Client-Based Services at 450-638-0500. You may be eligible for one of the following as early as April 1, 2020:
  • Employment Insurance (E.I.)
  • Social Assistance (S.A.)
  • Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) paid through Canada Revenue Agency

If your business has closed/suspended services or is otherwise affected by COVID-19, immediately contact Tewatohnhi’saktha (450-638-4280). You may be eligible for Business Interruption Assistance.

Client Based Services is working to respond to more than 700 calls to access the Emergency Relief Fund for people who are unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team is contacting applicants from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm seven (7) days per week;

Please make yourself available to answer the call. Your cooperation is essential to speed up the process of distributing relief payments.

Also, please have your identification available to complete an application.

Additionally, Chief & Council have empowered a Board of Representatives to oversee distribution of the Relief Fund they are as follows:

  • Ratitsénhaienhs Gina Deer, Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer, Mike Delisle, Jr.
  • Barbara McComber of Tewatohnhi’saktha
  • Alexis Shackleton of MCK Client-Based Services.

Client Based Services

Client Based Services is assembling a team to respond to more than 700 calls to access the Emergency Relief Funds (ERM) for people who are unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team will be contacting applicants from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm weekdays and weekends; please have your identification available, applications will be completed over the phone. Relief payments will be sent by cheque next week.

If you are recently unemployed as a result of COVID-19, you may be eligible for one of the following:

  • COVID-19 (ERM) Kahnawa’kehró:non Benefit Fund
  • Social Assistance (S.A.)
  • Employment Insurance
  • Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) Paid through Canada Revenue Agency
Applicants will also be asked to provide information for direct deposit so that monies can reach you in a safe and timely fashion moving forward. This would include a copy of a void cheque (copies can be accessed from your online banking service).

Individuals who have already called Client Based Services to make a claim please do not make a duplicate call; a team member will reach out to you as soon as possible.
