Election Law to move forward

02/29/2012

The Kahnaw:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission wishes to inform the community that, as a result of last nights Community Hearing, proposed amendments to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law will be moving forward using the Community Decision Making Process.

The first of two questions posed to the community (Should the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake Election Law be amended?) was answered with a unanimous yes by those present.

The second question put forth (If yes, which proposed recommendations should be given priority?) was discussed, though the discussions were not completed at the time the meeting concluded.

The list of possible amendments included criteria for candidates; term limits; the number of Council Chiefs; the creation of consistency between the Election Law and the Kahnaw:ke Membership Law; and chiefs accountability.

Once this is completed, it is intended that Kahnawakehr:non will come to an agreement on the scope, purpose and intent of proposed amendments, with the ultimate intention of giving a mandate to a technical team to create amendments that meets the needs of the community.

The next Hearing will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Tuesday, 20 Ennisk:wa/March from 6 to 8pm. Once again, please note that the organizers will be maintaining a strict schedule of two hour meetings in order to respect the schedules of as many people as possible. Participants are being asked to arrive by approximately 5:45pm in order for seating arrangements to be explained.

Copies of the current law, the community consultation feedback report, and other relevant information are available at the MCK main office reception or by accessing the website www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com.
