Motorists advised to use caution

12/18/2012

The Community Protection Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke would like to advise road users that, in light of the current weather, road conditions are extremely hazardous and to use caution when operating a motor vehicle.

The best advice is not to drive at all if you can avoid it. If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared and that you know how to handle the road conditions. Also, allow yourself extra time to reach your destination.

Tips for driving safely on icy roads

Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.

Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, keeping a steady pressure on the brake pedal will facilitate a shorter breaking distance.

Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing.

Don′t pass snow plows and salting trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you′re likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.

To facilitate quicker and safer clean up, please refrain from parking cars on the roadway whenever possible, particularly in areas where roads are narrow.
