Ban on open fires in Kahnawake & Tioweroton

The Community Protection Unit (CPU) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke, along with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade (KFB), would like to inform the public that the possibility of a forest fire is currently rated at extreme across Quebec and has issued a ban on open fires in Kahnawą:ke and Tioweró:ton as a safety precaution.

"In order to ensure the safety and well-being of our natural resources we must protect it by utilizing these prevention methods," said Director of CPU Kellyann Meloche. “The cooperation of all is essential so that the ban is maintained to reduce the risk of wildfires.”

The KFB has responded to 23 brush fires in the last 6 weeks. A couple of them were quite serious and all were intentionally set. Currently, 15 fires are active in Quebec. Since the beginning of the fire season, 146 fires have affected 118 hectares. The average of the last ten years at the same time is 87 fires covering an area of 86.9 hectares.

If any further information is required, please contact the Community Protection Unit at 450-632-0635 or the Tioweró:ton Caretaker at 819-321-3375.
