Membership (S-3) on the agenda at AFN Chiefs Assembly

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to advise the community that Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton, along with Kenits�nhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer and Rhonda Kirby, will be attending the Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly taking place tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday in Gatineau.

Agenda items include First Nations Membership (S-3); the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; Cannabis legislation; and First Nations Languages Legislation.

�We need to make all First Nations aware of the real threats posed by Canada�s S-3 amendments to the Indian Act,� said Grand Chief Norton. �The recent Iroquois Caucus Membership/Citizenship Summit was a wake-up call for many in our own communities regarding the huge numbers of �new Indians� that Canada is creating, and the expected impacts that their actions will cause.�

Several federal ministers are expected to attend, including both ministers in the now-separated Department of Indigenous Affairs & Northern Development: Carolyn Bennett (Minister of Crown - Indigenous Relations & Northern Affairs) and Jane Philpott (Minister of the Department of Indigenous Services Canada).
