CP Rail Vegetation Management

06/03/2019

The Public Safety Unit (Public Safety) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke wishes to advise the community that CP Rail is authorized to conduct Vegetation Control measures to ensure safe operations of the trains. The spraying is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, June 4th. If the weather conditions do not permit spraying, the work will be completed on either June 5th or 6th.

The spraying will be monitored by staff from Public Safety to ensure that best practices are followed. These include the use of heavy shrouding, which prevents the spray from spreading beyond the track ballast (the stones on which the tracks rest), and no spraying takes place if there is any wind greater than 8 kilometers per hour.

It is important to note that, while both Public Safety and the Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office have concerns about spraying, it is agreed that safety must remain a priority. CP Rail has agreed to continue its search for alternate methods of controlling the vegetation.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the vegetation control measures are available at the Public Safety Unit.
