KEPO seeking participants for a community-based Air Quality Monitoring Workshop

The Kahnaw�:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO), in collaboration with Concordia University, will be hosting a second Air Quality Monitoring Workshop on Wednesday, January 25, from 5pm to 8pm at the Golden Age Club. 

KEPO is seeking community participants interested in assembling a monitor and hosting a station at their homes. In particular, community members who reside near the Saint-Lawrence Seaway, CP train tracks, Mercier Bridge, Highways, and Industrial Operations. However, all community members are urged to participate as we wish to cover the entire territory. Facilitators will guide participants through the step-by-step instructions and give a short presentation on air quality impacts on the community.

During the workshop, several commercial and DIY monitors will be assembled and installed throughout the community to collect data on conditions year-round. KEPO will collect and analyze data from the monitors to help understand the impacts on air quality due to infrastructure in the community and better position itself to advocate for and implement improvements. 

Space is limited, and registration is required. A light meal will be provided.

Over the last two years, KEPO has been working with Concordia University to create an air quality monitoring network within Kahnaw�:ke as part of the Decolonizing Light project. The project explores ways and approaches to decolonizing science, such as revitalizing and restoring Indigenous knowledge and capacity building for community-determined projects.
