Upcoming Rail Vegetation Management

06/05/2023

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke wishes to advise the community that Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC - formerly Canadian Pacific Railway) is authorized to conduct Vegetation Control measures to ensure safe operations of the trains.

The spraying is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, with rain dates set for June 8th or June 9th. Spraying will take place in the morning and the process will take approximately 20 minutes.

CPKC must follow Transport Canadas Rules Respecting Track Safety and needs to spray the track to control vegetation. Vegetation control products will only be applied to track ballast, which is 16-feet wide. All products used by CPKC have been approved by the Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

Vegetation management is important, as it allows certified track inspectors to regularly assess the condition of the railway tracks, said Ratsnhaienhs Ryan Montour, Portfolio Lead on Public Safety. Keeping the tracks clear of vegetation also allows for proper drainage of the ballast (the rocks that hold the ties in place) to help prevent degradation of the tracks. The most relevant issue here is to prevent train derailments to protect our people.
