Sky-Deer attending CHPE event in Queens NY

09/19/2023

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that  Ohn:ton :iente ne Ratitsnhaienhs (Grand Chief) Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer is in Queens, New York, attending a groundbreaking ceremony for the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) Project, which is part of the Hydro-Qubec/Kahnaw:ke Hertel Project.

I am proud to attend this construction kickoff to represent the important role that my Mohawk community of Kahnaw:ke has played in this project as co-owners of the transmission line on the northern side of the border that will transport clean renewable electricity to the people of New York, said Ohn:ton :iente ne Ratitsnhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. Over the past century, our Mohawk ironworkers have helped build up the New York City skyline. And now we have an opportunity to contribute in a different manner as stewards of the environment. As such, Kahnaw:ke is grateful to contribute to New Yorks continuing transition towards green energy.

The first groundbreaking event was held in Whitehall, NY in November of 2022, and kicked off the start of the construction phase for this historic project.
