Waste Management reminder - affected waste removal

The Waste Management Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake is reminding the community of the materials that are accepted for household garbage pickup and Transfer Depot drop-offs. In the wake of recent flooding of homes in the community, we understand that there is a rise in the volume of waste as a result of repairs/demolitions.

Please be mindful that although certain types of waste are acceptable through Household Garbage pickup and the Transfer Depot, these services can only sustain a limited amount before they can no longer accommodate removing the waste. As a result, it would mean that not all waste will be picked up. To help alleviate this issue, homeowners who are repairing damage due to recent flooding are urged to contact their insurance providers for waste disposal service at their homes.

Additionally, to prevent any waste from not being picked up/accepted, please ensure the following:

Items accepted/not accepted for household garbage pickup:

• YES: Household garbage
• YES: Upholstered furniture
• YES: Mattresses
• YES: Rugs & other household furniture items
• NO: Any recyclable materials (utilize recycling pickup service)
• NO: Construction demolition
• NO: Hazardous wastes

Items accepted/not accepted at the Transfer Depot:

• YES: Minimal construction/demolition waste (minor residential renovations/repairs)
• YES: Household hazardous waste
• YES: Tire, metal, electronics, oil & battery recycling
• NO: Construction/demolition waste from contractors
• NO: Household garbage (utilize household pickup service)

Please note that non-acceptable items left curbside will not be picked up by the contractor (Matrec), and the Transfer Depot will not accept drop-offs of unacceptable materials.
